The Decade Project (on Muxtape)

Can you describe things through music? Do you like to make playlists? Can you describe a decade through a playlist? Do you want to try? Then join The Decade Project!

It's easy! All you have to do is:

1. Send an email to teiladnam@gmail.com including the URL to your Muxtape (create one here; more information is here) and your name. Optionally, you can include a URL/email address to link to your name and your age. It's interesting to see how people's impressions of a decade's music change depending on their age.
2. Create a Muxtape with the title of The Decade Project: (decade) (i.e., The Decade Project: The 60s) and a caption that includes the URL to this page (http://www.mandaliet.com/decade).
3. Select between 9 and 12 songs recorded in the specified decade to represent that decade! Keep in mind that you are to use only one song per artist.
4. Pay particular attention to the flow of the songlist. The entries are not judged, but you should try to represent the decade in terms of running sequence as well as song choice.
5. Keep your Muxtape unchanged until the next submission period. Once it's time to create a new Muxtape, use the same account.

It is possible to join in on the fun without committing to the entire project: simply create a Muxtape for any decade in the last 100 years and submit it using this form. Keep in mind that these casual entries will be listed separately.

Need some help getting started? Pretend that you are going to describe an entire decade to another person through 12 songs. How would you do that? Would you choose historically important songs? Would you choose songs that are particularly poignant in your own life? Would you choose ones that fit a theme that you feel that summarizes the decade? Would you simply pick songs you like? These and more are all valid solutions.

While it is permissible to not complete the project, it is our hope that if you start in the middle, you continue to submit until the completion.

The Muxtapes must follow the Muxtape rules, primarily: Songs must be less than 10MB each. Also, you may use songs that were recorded in the specified decade but were included on compilations later; however, live versions of suitable recordings not from the time period, as well as subsequent versions/covers, should not included. Please use only one song per track—no combining songs into one track.

The purpose of this project is to:

1. Gather a range of perspectives on the decades in question from as large a group of people as possible, and have for each week a 'gallery' for viewing.
2. Promote the art of concisely and evocatively articulating a perspective on a subject; in this case a viewpoint or summary of a span of time.
3. Encourage the use of Muxtape as a viable and worthwhile music-sharing/exhibiting tool.
